Troubleshooting Lawn Care Tasks: Why Didn’t My Grass Seed Grow?

How come my grass seed won’t grow? Your grass seed won’t grow when soil temperatures are too cold, when there is poor seed to soil contact, or when the grass seed dries out or is too wet. Ensure you plant grass seed at the appropriate time, on prepared soil, and ensure that it receives sufficient water.

When looking to create a thicker and healthier lawn, overseeding is a great choice. However, there is a bit more to overseeding than just applying grass seed and hoping for the best. If you’ve ever attempted to grow new grass only for the effort to fail, you’ll likely be left wondering, why didn’t my grass seed germinate? There are several reasons why grass seed might not grow, and thankfully, most issues with growing new grass are easy to solve.

Why Is My Grass Seed Not Growing?

If you’ve recently planted grass seed and are not seeing new growth, you’ll likely be asking yourself, why are my grass seeds not germinating? When grass doesn’t grow as expected, either one or a variety of factors can be the culprit. The following factors are some of the most common reasons why your new grass seed might not be growing.

  • The temperature is too cold – grass will grow rapidly in the spring. However, if you seed your lawn too early, it may be too cold for the germination process to begin. In Ontario, you’ll want to plant grass seeds when the soil temperature is consistently at or above 10°C to promote growth.
  • There is poor seed to soil contact – for grass seed to grow, it needs to make contact with the soil. If your lawn has an excessive buildup of thatch, it may be impossible for adequate soil contact to take place. Before you plant grass seed, it may be a good idea to conduct both lawn aeration and lawn dethatching to support new growth.
  • There is too much or not enough water – grass needs plenty of water to grow. Though spring is often rainy, there may be times when relying on rainfall is not sufficient. Be sure to provide your new grass seed with enough water to support its growth. Alternatively, if there is an abundance of rainfall, watering your lawn in addition to the rain may introduce too much water and make it difficult for new grass to grow.
